A Total of 35 members had a lovely day out at Somerleyton Hall Gardens in Suffolk on September 12th. This 12 acre garden was full of horticultural surprises from ancient trees over 300 years old, a walled garden full of unusual plants and grasses, such as Miscanthus lutarioriparus which grows over 6 metres tall in a season. There was also a fiendishly tricky maze to navigate. Head Gardener, Simon Gaches, previously of the Bishops Garden in Norwich, is slowly putting his impressive stamp on these stately home gardens. With plantings of rare species and interesting landscaping, including ponds and sculptures along with garden areas such as a jungle garden, the white garden and a restored ‘My Lady’s’ garden with over a 1000 roses.
