SUMMARY:Joseph Banks\, Kew and the Plant Hunters - Andrew Sankey
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the November meeting is the engaging Andrew Sankey. In this presentation Andrew will talk about one of his botanical heroes\, Joseph Banks. Banks first came to fame as the botanist on Captain James Cook first voyage to the antipodes\, returning with many new plants not previously seen in Europe before. He was later tasked by King George III to establish a national botantic garden\, which he did in Kew botanic gardens and was the first unofficial director\, sending botanists around the world to collect plants\, making Kew one of the world’s best botanic gardens. He was also the president of the Royal Society for 41 years. So come along to hear about this champion of botany and the natural world\, brought to life by Andrew’s enthusiastic presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Using 30 years of Garden BirdWatch data\, the Birtish Trust of Ornitology are well placed to advise on best practice for gardening for wildlife. \nThis Talk will be given by Rowena Jackson\, who is an ambassador for BTO  Garden Birdwatch project as well as a member of our garden club. The talk will cover food and feeding\, shelter/ nest boxes\, ponds and planting. It will also include information about how to take part in Garden BirdWatch to help monitor population and distribution changes across the UK.

DESCRIPTION:Claire will provide some background on the peat-free movement\, as well as explaining how peat-free composts are made and which are best. Claire will also give us tips and advice on how to get the best results for our plants when growing with peat-free compost. Claire is Peat-Free Campaign Project Manager for the RHS. Over the last three years she has been getting to grips with her allotment\, enjoying trying out new plants. Her background is in ecology and she tries to make her plot as wildlife-friendly as possible.

SUMMARY:In the Garden with William Morris – Fiona Rose
DESCRIPTION:More famous for his work inside the home\, William Morris (1834-1896) made a significant impact on the evolution of the English garden. He considered the garden inseparable from the house\, rejecting Victorian formality and instead drawing inspiration from medieval gardens. \nThis talk examines his gardening principles drawing from Morris’s lectures\, letters\, poetry\, and prose. It also explores his own gardens that served as an inspiration behind his flower-based designs: Red House\, Kelmscott Manor\, Kelmscott House and the garden at his workshops in Merton Abbey.
